Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - Monument, CO to Childress, TX
We woke up at 5:00 and were ready to hit the road at 6:00. Taking the back roads through Eastern Colorado gave us a glimpse of the flat rural areas of our state.
We saw many Lark Bunting, Colorado's State Bird as well as Canada Geese, antelope (prong horn), and several beautiful hawks. We drove through almost deserted towns, noting that rural life in Colorado is not flourishing!
At 8:30 we stopped for a restroom break at Kit Carson and then headed South on US-287. We hit dense fog early at Rush and had cool and humid weather all the way to the border. Visibility was poor but it was nice for traveling as it was not too hot.
We crossed the Oklahoma Sate line at 11:25 and lost an hour going back to Central Time. We entered Texas at 1:00 and had lunch at Stratford.
Our trip to Childress through Amarillo was relatively easy on a new well maintained 4 lane US-287. We arrived at our Comfort Inn at 5:00. We washed the bugs off of the car, caught up on e-mails and Gen worked on her classes. We then took a walk to dinner and after dinner we hiked about 12 blocks to a DQ and then strolled home again enjoying a beautiful sunset over the Texas Panhandle!
