Thursday, September 20, 2007 - Childress, TX to Austin, TX
Another early morning - our alarm went off at 6:00. I took care of a few soccer messages. This is the 25th Anniversary of Varsity Soccer at Lewis-Palmer. I am contacting all of the young men and women who played for me and we are having the men's Reunion game on October 2nd. The women's will be played in the spring.
We had breakfast at the hotel and then left Childress at 7:45 heading South on US-83 through Abilene and then on to Austin. Just as we were driving out of Guthrie, north of Abilene, we saw a 300 pound wild boar dead on the side of the highway. I stopped to look at it - wow - talk about Road Kill - everything is bigger in Texas!
The drive through this part of Central Texas was beautiful. There were lush green fields of cotton, lots of cattle, and many herds of goats. We stopped at a shady roadside picnic area and had our lunch at 11:45.
The rest of our afternoon drive was scenic passing through very small towns with huge high school football stadiums. We also noticed many hunting supply stores, featuring tall "blinds" which we also saw perched and ready for hunting season in the rolling hills.
We stopped a few miles outside of Austin and washed the car and then completed our drive into the city. We found our La Quinta Inn easily - thank goodness for Google maps! We unpacked and settled in for the long weekend. It is warm, 94 degrees, humidity is 49%, and the Heat Stress index is 102.2! A little different than Monument, we are not complaining - just letting you know the Weather Report!
Ted called at 5:00 and was at the hotel by 5:30. We went with him to his new apartment which is much closer to his work. We took a short tour of the apartment complex, very new and beautifully decorated!
We went to eat at the Thai Passion Restaurant and were joined by his friend Sonia Segura. After a delicious dinner and great conversation we walked down famous, Congress Street ending up at the State Capital Building. It was open until 10:00 and we enjoyed wandering around and learning more of the history of Texas.
After 10:30 we went back to the hotel. A long but super day in Texas!
