April 30, 2007 - Monday - Denver, CO to Frankfurt, Germany
Our bags are packed and we're ready to go. We're leaving on a jet plane…
We left our house at the top of Palmer Divide at 1:00 PM, made a quick stop in Monument at the Post Office and the bank. We went north to Castle Rock where we stopped at the Western Convenience in to fill the tank of the CR-V ($2.88) and then drove up I-25 to I-225 and then onto Denver International Airport and the Pikes Peak shuttle parking.
The temperature in Denver was in the low 80's, quite a change from the unbelievable snow storm we had just 6 days ago. We got over 18 inches of snow in less than 24 hours and it was so heavy and wet that our area had many spruce and ponderosas pines broken. I think we lost five trees just in our property.
Our check-in went without a hitch, but our frequent flyer number was not on their database. We stopped at the United desk, got our Mileage Plus numbers and were on our way to security. We went through in less than 2 minutes!
We took the train to Terminal A and walked to Gate 43 where the Lufthansa flight attendant was very glad to note our frequent flyer number and suggested we use the Continental President's Club to await our flight. As we still had over an hour and a half, we took her suggestion and went to the Club. I found that they have an open network so I got on and IM'ed our son Eduardo and caught up on some emails.
At 4:30 we went to Gate A41 and promptly boarded the Lufthansa Airbus 340-600. We had never flown this aircraft before so it was a new experience for us. We had seats 4A and 4C and as we settled in we had to figure out the many seat controls. As I looked around I saw that there were only six women in Business and two children. About ¼ of the seats were unoccupied.
At 5:24 the aircraft pulled away from the gate and we finally took off at 5:50. By 7 PM we left US airspace and entered Canada. At 7:30 they served us dinner - Gennie choosing the wild salmon and I picked the Pad Thai. At 9 PM many in the cabin had reconfigured their seats and were going to sleep. These new seats slide down and lay almost flat, with the feet going under the seat assembly in front.
I slept fitfully until 1:30 AM when I got up and went to the wash room. As I returned to my seat the flight attendants had turned on the lights in the cabin to begin their breakfast service - it was 9:30 AM Frankfurt time and we were only 1.5 hours from touchdown.
