Crossroads of Adriatic

May 01, 2007 - Tuesday - Frankfurt, Germany to Zagreb, Croatia

The new Long-Haul seats in Business Class on the Airbus A340-600 of Lufthansa make it possible to totally stretch out for a comfortable sleep. We were able to get about 5 hours of sleep, waking up at about 9 AM Frankfurt time.

We were served a light breakfast, had time to freshen up after our overnight flight, and collect ourselves for the next leg of our journey. We arrived at Terminal 1 at 11:05 docking at Gate B-26. We had to walk just a short way through security and to Gate B-56 for our flight at 12:30 to Zagreb.

We fond a quiet corner and I caught up with the journal for our first day of this new adventure. We only had an hour layover before our flight was called at 12:05 PM. We boarded a shuttle bus that took us to the tarmac and our awaiting plane.

The flight was just over 90 minutes and before long we had landed in Croatia. We arrived at 2 PM and luckily our luggage was in the first group out. We were met by an OAT representative and then waited a few more minutes for Phyllis and Dan from Washington state who were also on the flight.

We had about 15 minute taxi ride to the Palace Hotel in the heart of the city. Today was May 1st - Labor Day - in most European countries. It was interesting to walk around the city with very few stores open but lots local people enjoying their holiday.

We met our tour director Thamila (Tammy) and we were taken to our room on the second floor. Our room is spacious and overlooks a garden. We unpacked, I check the internet connection, and we gathered our cameras for an informal self-guided tour of the city.

Our hotel is centrally located so we are within easy walking distance of the sites. We spent about an hour exploring the city center and then wound our way back to the hotel for a quick shower before our 6 PM meeting and welcome drink.

Tammy introduced herself, told us a brief description of this tour, and we then introduced ourselves to the group of 16.

As it was time for dinner we walked back to the main plaza and then on to Bistro Capuciner for a pizza dinner. It was a large restaurant but we chose to sit outside away from the heavy smoke at the inside tables. How quickly we forget that so many Europeans smoke.

We shared a Garden Salad and each of us had a very generous individual pizza. We also had a half liter of wine and a Coke. Yummy and all for less than $20 - one of the best deals we have seen in Europe.

We walked back to the hotel by way of an ice cream shop we had seen in the afternoon. The owner helped us with a few more Croatian phrases. I took a number of pictures of the early evening as we walked back to the Palace Hotel.

Gennie and I worked on the journal and pictures and then prepared them for the upload. We know we have to be up and around by 7 AM for a city tour tomorrow. What a pleasure to have free high-speed internet access here in our room. I am sure we will not find this the norm but we appreciate it while we have it here in Zagreb.
