Day 04 - Tuesday, April 27, 2010 – Frederikssund, Denmark
What a quiet night! Although you can see the fjord from the house you cannot hear the waves. We did hear the happy little birds just as the sun was coming up.
Denmark is so far north, we had light at 5:36 am and it does not get dark until 8:30 pm. Although it was sunny when Jesper, Ulla, Gennie and I left the house at 11:22 for our excursion, it was only 56 º with a slight wind.
On our way north we stopped for several photo opportunities. The quaint farms with their yellow buildings and thatched roofs made perfect pictures.
The grass was bright green, the daffodils were plentiful, and the tulips were just starting to bloom. When we reached Heather Hill on the coast, we hiked for about 30 minutes.
The view of the Kattegat Sea was impressive. The white caps were a beautiful contrast against the deep blue sea. It was windy and cold, but well worth the climb to the crest of the cliff overlooking the expansive sea.
We continued around the island to the tip of Zealand where we had a seafood lunch in Gilleleje, a small fishing town. While we walked and took photos, we tried reading signs and enjoyed the crisp sea breezes.
Lunch was at Adamsen’s Fisk, a small seaside take out. We sat outside and enjoyed our meal as well as the sights, sounds, and smells of a fishing harbor.
Our journey back home took us to Fredensborg, where the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II has her summer palace. The Danish flags were all out and security tight as she was entertaining the President of Russia today.
We walked as close as we could but did not see Her Highness or Medvedve. We did see the police and military and watched a Carlsberg Brewery truck make its way into the grounds.
It was almost 5:00 when we returned to the Poulsen’s Palace. The girls were home from school and started to cook dinner – AH - the joys of teenage chefs!
Our delicious meal was pasta, pesto sauce with bacon, vegetables, and sausage. After dinner we took a walk by the fjord and enjoyed the fresh air and the Danish sunset. When we walked back to the house we watched a few presentations of the girls in their gymnastics competitions.
