01 Day - Saturday, April 24, 2010 - Flight - Denver to Frankfurt, Germany
Mother Nature has had us worried all week. Along with thousands of other travelers, we had been watching the news of the volcanic eruption in Iceland that grounded all European flights for 6 days.
There really was no Plan B, but our trusty Travel Agent, Dan Kraft worked all week to keep us abreast of the European schedules. Worried? Yes, but we were resolved that there was not much we could do but hope for the best.
Just when we found out that our flights were going to depart on time and that the airspace over Germany and Denmark, Mother Nature reminded us one more time who was boss!
Thursday when Gennie arrived home from class, it began to rain and by 9:00 we were engulfed in a Colorado Spring Blizzard. During the next 36 hours we got 2.5 feet of wet heavy snow.
On Friday afternoon we shoveled and plowed and dug our neighbors out of the drifts. The worst part of Spring Snows is always the damage to the trees.
Saturday before we left for the airport we tied up several of our Ponderosa Pine to see if we could save them. The ground is saturated and their roots are shallow.
By 1:30 we were packed and ready to leave for Denver and DIA. Traffic was light and we were very surprised at the lack of lines at the check in desk.
Our bags were checked all the way to Billund in Denmark and we had almost no wait going through security. We went right to the Lufthansa/British Airways Business Lounge to wait for our flight to be called.
Denver International Airport has free Wi-Fi access, so we took advantage to write a few notes, for Gennie to check her UOP classes, and to start the Garcia Trips Journal for Day One of our new adventure.
Luckily, for us Lufthansa has a direct flight from Denver to Frankfurt and once at their hub in Germany we can get anywhere. The flight was excellent and the service was outstanding for the overnight crossing over the Atlantic.
The cruising altitude was 39,000 feet, much higher than normal to avoid any lingering ash. We arrived in Frankfurt on time and semi-rested.

The hotel prepared a box breakfast for us as we had to be in the lobby way before the breakfast room was open.
