Italy and Greece

Day 9 - Sunday, September 16, 2001

We got up at 6:15 and had breakfast of croissants, hard rolls, coffee, cereal, juice. Typical European continental breakfast.

We took small buses to a shop that made inlaid furniture and were given a tour of the facilities and opportunity to purchase.

We were driven to the docks where we got onto a large ferry for the 40 minute trip to Capri. When we got there it looked like everyone else was there also.

It was a Sunday, one of their saint days, so a lot of religious people we out enjoying the island, and this made things hectic.

We got on a bus after waiting 30 minutes and went to the high city, Anacapri, and there we were given a brief tour and then went to the chair lift to get to the top of the island.

It is a very rocky island. The 360 degree view from the top was impressive, but as there was some humidity in the air we could not see across the bay to Naples and the American naval base.

We took the lift down and looked at little shops. We walked partially down the hill and went to the Bella Vista Restaurant overlooking the cliffs and the bays. Nice lunch.

We had a choice of pasta, sole fish or veal. We chose pasta. Our meal came and we were served a salad, glass of wine, tomato and basil pasta, couple of rolls, and ice cream. We went down to Anacapri and had some time to shop or just look in the shops.

We walked down to an overlook on the south side where we had a great view of the sea and area.

We walked back up the mountain side, looking at more shops and smelling the perfume factories in the area.

We took an inclined railway to the docks where we were put on the ferry to go back to Sorrento and our hotel and our room - it is a little spartan.

Tonight we had a Farewell to Italy dinner at a nice restaurant in Sarrento. Gennie had the fish dinner and I had the pasta.

Both were very good but some people did not have good things to say about the fish. There were 7 courses and a bottle and a half of wine. Gennie and I danced several dances.

We walked home and looked for the internet connection but they had just closed - 11:30PM. Our life has really changed here.
