Day 14 - Friday, September 21, 2001
We got up at 8 AM and went down for breakfast around 8:45. Nice continental breakfast and some fresh fruit.
I complained again about the room being hot.
We went for a short walk and to check our email. We returned to a dirty room as they worked on the air. Now it is cool but water is leaking from the air conditioner on the bath floor.
We went out, by the statue of Zeus and walked to the Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
We saw the changing of the guard and all their fancy steps. We stayed there about 45 minutes and then walked across to a little park where we had our fountain picture taken.
We walked down their 5th Avenue with their pricey shops then around to a church, then to the Plaka where they sell their t-shirts and other goods.
We wandered around those back alleys and it was nice. Getting very warm. We bought a peach ice tea and walked home.
Back at the hotel we repacked our bags to try to consolidate all of our stuff as we won't have too much time for the rest of our stay.
At 2:50 we went downstairs for our trip to the Temple of Poseidon, one hour away. The bus was late as there was a demonstration downtown.
We met Russ and Donna who had just flown in, not on Delta but Olympic Airlines (Greek). They had a nicer flight and meals so it worked out. Delta tells us we will fly out on Sunday as scheduled.
We got on the bus and took a trip through town to the coast and then a winding trip on the seacoast to the temple.
When we got there, I saw a S2000 that had just driven in - just like mine but 2000 model. I went and spoke to the guy and he loves this wonderful car. Gave him my URL to see my car.
We went to the temple - this is just one building. The site was one day sailing from Athens and the fishermen gave offerings before going out.
They also had two naval ships there for protection. It was OK. We got home at 6:45 and have to be out for dinner at 7:30.
We had dinner at a restaurant one block away overlooking the Acropolis and Parthenon. The lights came on the Acropolis and then on the hills that it sits on.
As our group is large we were packed in to the restaurant. Dinner was bread and wine, red and white, stuffed tomatoes, cucumber and sour cream salad, eggplant salad, green peppers and coleslaw, giant lima beans (ugh!). The main course of kabobs, mixed (chicken, pork and sausage) or all chicken.
Our tour guide sat beside us so we were able to speak to him about conditions in travel, differences in national attitudes and the fact he spoke 8 languages. At 10:30 we walked home with some of our group.
Day 13 - Saturday, April 22, 2022 - Depart for U.S.
The hotel prepared a box breakfast for us as we had to be in the lobby way before the breakfast room was open.
Last night we found out that our departure flight back to...
