Day 3 - Monday, September 10, 2001
It is Monday morning in Rome and the city is alive! We got up very early this morning and at 6:30 had breakfast with 100 other people - it was a mess.
We were out of the Holiday Inn by 7 AM as we were going to the Vatican. We got there and we were the fifth group in line. It was a very good tour as we had a good city guide and she had a transmitter and we all had little receivers that allowed us to hear her presentation as far away as 100 yards. Even when we asked her questions, everyone else could hear her.
We saw the Sistine Chapel and their museum, then went to St. Peters Cathedral (biggest in the world) and it was impressive with everyone in there.
In the afternoon, we went to the area of the Coliseum and the Forum. We walked through the Forum but we did not have time to visit the Coliseum.
At 2:30 PM we got back on the big 50 passenger bus and drove back to the hotel. We had a good view of the city with Michael giving us a running commentary of what we were seeing.
At night we went to a very nice restaurant. We had Italian appetizers with all the wine, beer, and soda we could consume. The show began with an light humorous opera with 4 performers.
We then had the second course with rice, pasta and more opera. The third course was veal for the both of us and another rendition of an opera. Then dessert and opera. IT WAS GREAT! And you know how much I like opera. Some portions were very funny and well done.
As we left we got on the bus and went to see the city. We stopped by the Spanish Steps at the Church of the Holy Trinity, walked down, seeing the night life at 10 PM.
We walked to the Trevi Fountains and threw coins with our right hand over our left shoulder so we could return to Rome.
While at the Steps and Fountains there were vendors trying to sell roses. They gave them to us and then if we tried to walk away, they came after us. Funny but a bit tiring after a while. We finally had to tell them that we were not interested and walked away.
Both Gennie and I really liked Rome - it is clean and had lots of very friendly people. We arrived back at our hotel at 11:30 PM. It was a really fun day!
We will spend the majority of the day in the bus tomorrow. We will rotate seats every day so that everyone will get a chance to sit up front.
Day 13 - Saturday, April 22, 2022 - Depart for U.S.
The hotel prepared a box breakfast for us as we had to be in the lobby way before the breakfast room was open.
Last night we found out that our departure flight back to...
