Day 14 - Saturday, March 15, 2025 –Málaga, Spain; Costa del Sol; Andalusia; Leave Málaga

Vic was a little under the weather so we decided to take a break for the day and we had a leisurely breakfast. After the groups had gone for their ½ day tour of Fringiliana, we went up to the Sun Deck and enjoyed a beautiful morning on the Costa del Sol.

The sky was a blue with a few fluffy white clouds and the Mediterranean Sea was a brilliant turquoise. It was truly a picture post card day in Malaga. There is a famous film festival in Malaga this weekend so the board walk in front of the pier was full of people enjoying their Saturday in Spain.

When the groups came back from their time away, we joined our friends for lunch and heard all about the last town to be occupied by the Moors before being expelled by the Spanish in 1492.

Our two Moroccan guides, Aziz and Nour gave us an enlightening presentation about the Berber Culture of North Africa at 3:30. The highlights of the lecture and discussion were:

  • The Amazigh people, or Berbers have been in Africa 10,000 years
  • Amazigh means Free People
  • Arabic was originally a verbal language, Tifinagh is now the written form of Tamazight language
  • The Berber Culture was influenced by the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the spread of the Islamic religion.
  • The Berbers lived in the mountains, were shepherds, had strong community values and are noted for their hospitality.

At 5:00 the Captain came on the loud speaker and reminded us all that we would be leaving the port and sailing at 5:30. The original time was at 6:00 so we are hoping that all of the shoppers were able to get back on the Clio in time for our departure.

We went out on our little veranda and took a few parting photos of Malaga. This has been our home for almost 5 days but we are looking forward to seeing new sites tomorrow.
