Day 10 - Tuesday, March 11, 2025 –Ship Docked in Málaga, Spain; Costa del Sol; Andalusia

The Clio docked at the Port of Malaga just before midnight enabling us to have a very calm night’s sleep. The alarm went off at 7:15 and we had breakfast before our morning activity.

The red group left the ship at 9:10 for a walking tour of this beautiful city on Spain’s Costa del Sol. Our local guide was Antonio and he managed to keep all of us in line as we walked from the port around the city.

The first highlight was a visit to the impressive Moorish fortress at the top of the city. The Alcazaba was built in the 11th Century and remains one of the best-preserved sites in Malaga. The orange trees were blooming and the gardens and fountains were lovely. We climbed to the top of the walls to see the 360-degree views below.

Antonio pointed out the bull ring, the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and Pablo’s birthplace, as well as several other sites that we had visited in 2004. It was interesting to see the growth of the city compared to 21 years ago when we were first here.

As we walked, more and more tourist groups came into the city. There was a long line waiting to enter the Alcazaba when we left, so we were happy to have gotten there early.

Our next discovery was the Roman Theater dating from the 7th Century BCE. After strolling through the narrow streets and alleys, we made our way to the birthplace of Picasso and had a photo taken with Pablo in the city park.

Some of the group stayed in the City Center to visit the museums and the cathedral. Antonio walked with us back to the port and after lunch on board the ship we had a chance to relax and compare our photos from our Trafalgar trip in 2004.

OAT and our Trip Leaders and the Clio crew are being very accommodating to us because of all of the changes that have had to be made with our itinerary on this trip. Tonight, before the Port Talk, all of the drinks at the bar were complimentary.

Malaga has been a very charming refuge while we are waiting out this Mediterranean storm. The day was sunny and warm with a few wispy clouds. It is amazing what a little sunshine does to keep all of us smiling.

Sounds like a perfect spot to be while you wait out the storm!

I'm sure I recognize Antonio! We were on the Costa del Sol trip in 2004. Stayed in Torremolino (?) and just signed up for day trips. Some of them were with Antonio, and I especially remember a day that he offered an unscheduled trip to Malaga by train. Just a few of us went with him and we had a wonderful time. He just looks a little older - it was 20 years ago!

I’m so glad you got a good night’s sleep, and then a sunny day! Beautiful views from your high point. How fun to compare your two trips! I looked up the Israel trip and we met in 2010! It’s been wonderful being able to follow your travels!
