Day 02 - October 13, 2011 - Thursday - Drive by way of Bennington and Brattleboro, Vermont; Concord and Portsmouth, NH; Kennebunkport and to Portland, ME
After a light breakfast at the Comfort Inn we were ready to leave Albany at 8:00 along with all of the other morning commuters. The skies were gray with a light mist and it was 61° with 80% humidity.
On our way out of the Capital Region on NY Route 7 we saw almost every yard was decorated for Halloween and Fall. The mums were just gorgeous; all shades of autumn colors. The hardwood trees were a mixture of green, gold, yellow, red, and browns – perfect timing for “Leaf Peepers”!
Even though we have not been in this area since our son graduated from Rensselaer in 2003, all of the great memories of our visits came back to us quickly when we saw the red brick buildings of the RPI Campus.
We made several stops for photos and although there was low light and gray skies the hill sides of the Hudson Valley were ablaze with color.
Crossing the border into Vermont, we drove on Route 9 and stopped in Bennington and took photos of the 1806 Congregational Church and the cemetery where Robert Frost was buried. Bennington is also the home of the famous American painter, Grandma Moses.
We saw the tallest war memorial in the world, the Battle Mountain Obelisk, dedicated to the defeat of the British army and the surrender of General Burgoyne, a turning point in the Revolutionary War.
As we followed the highway and the small rivers in southern Vermont we saw the roads that were washed out and the flooding from the Hurricane in August. There were several times we had to wait for road construction crews.
We crossed the border into New Hampshire at 10:15 and the rain got heavier as we went east. We stopped for gas at East Rochester just after noon; gas was $3.39/gal.
A sign welcoming us to Maine was just east of Rochester. We made a brief stop at Biddeford, at Best Buy and then at Hunt’s Camera Shop in the Maine Mall in Portland on I-95.
We traveled on I-295 until we arrived at Brunswick and saw a bald eagle soaring over the highway. At Brunswick we got on to Route 1 and then it was just an hour to our friend Judy’s home near Alna, ME.
Judy and her two dogs welcomed us with such generous hospitality and showed us to her guest house where we stayed for the night.
We got settled in and then drove to the village of Damariscotta where we had a delicious seafood dinner at the Damariscotta River Grill.
Our friend Marion and her husband Jim met us there for dinner and we had a wonderful time renewing our friendships and reminiscing about our trip to the Balkans in 2007.
We arrived back at Judy’s at 9:15 and thanked her again for her kindness and went to our house where we started the journal and reviewed the photos for the day.
Accommodations: Judy’s Home
Post a Comment!Am so envious of you seeing the beautiful fall colors!! That is what I miss about living here in California - although we have some pretty spectacular colors here too, but they are in the neighborhoods!

The hotel prepared a box breakfast for us as we had to be in the lobby way before the breakfast room was open.
