Kodiak, Alaska-Martin

Day 09 - Saturday - June 5, 2010 - Kodiak, Alaska

Happy Birthday to Eduardo A. Garcia! We woke up to rain again but the winds seem to be the most dangerous aspect of Kodiak weather.

After breakfast we read a bit and Gennie checked in online and printed our boarding passes for our flights tomorrow. We talked to Kathy about a change of plans for the excursion to Miller Point and Fort Abercrombie.

She had called the van driver, Mary who suggested that the weather out at the State Park might be better later so we rescheduled for 12:00 instead of 11:00.

We all met at the Harbor Master’s Office and Mary drove the Martins along with Skipper, the Boat Dog, and the Garcias to the Miller Point and Fort Abercrombie.

Fort Abercrombie was a World War II Coastal Defense installation with two eight-inch guns. The remnants of both guns were on display. This site became an Alaska State Historical Park in 1969 consisting of about 186 acres.

Mary dropped us off at the Ranger Station where we met Jennifer, the Park Ranger. She gave us a description of the park and showed us on the map where the best hiking trails were.

We spent about 20 minutes with her and then Mary took us to Miller Point and we went to the Kodiak Alaska Military Museum. The museum opened at 1:00 so in the mean time we took photos of the huge waves crashing on the rugged cliffs and rocks below.

I took a weather reading and found the temperature on the point to be 46º, the humidity was 92%, but the winds were 24.1 mph which made it feel very chilly.

The Hands-On Museum was housed in one of the WWII underground bunkers. On display were radio and communication equipment, a Willys Jeep, and an army ambulance.

Other memorabilia from the Alaskan Campaign during WWII are also housed here including information about the Japanese occupation of the tip of the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska.

We stayed in the museum for about 90 minutes and then hiked back to the Ranger Station on Wildflower Trail. Only a few of the wild flowers were blooming, but the trail was well marked with signage of this Temperate Rainforest.

It took us about two hours to hike a 20 minute trail, but Skipper loved every minute of the journey because when I stopped to take pictures, Vic and Kathy would let him run. His favorite games are hide the hat, chase the tennis ball, and hide and seek.

We brought a little lunch of apples, walnuts, cherries, trail mix, and chocolate – Skipper had dog cookies. Everyone was happy! It was 4:00 by the time we got back to the Ranger Station.

Kathy called Mary who came to pick us up and took us back to St. Paul’s Harbor. We went back to the hotel to sort through photos and Gennie started typing the journal.

At 4:45 we took the Alaskan Wellingtons, rubber boots that we have been wearing all week, back to the Martin’s boat. In all of this rain, they kept our feet warm and dry.

We had our Last Supper back at Henry’s with Vic & Kathy and then had dessert with them one last time on the Capella III. We said goodbye and made plans to see them again when they arrive back in Colorado in October.

Knowing we have an early morning, we paid the bill for the Kodiak Inn and posted the journal for our last day in Kodiak. The next entry will be when we arrive home after our flights to Anchorage, Seattle, and then to Denver on Sunday.

Accommodations: Best Western Kodiak Inn
