When we woke up today the clouds were higher, the skies lighter, and we could actually see many of the surrounding mountains of Kodiak Island. The temperature was 41º and the humidity was 95%.
The big event of the morning was the 4-H Sourdough Pancake Breakfast at the Elks Club. We met Vic & Kathy and Donny & Pat at the breakfast at 10:00. For just $5 (Senior Discount) we had all of the pancakes, ham, juice, and coffee we could hold.
As we left the breakfast it began to rain in earnest. This was Don & Pat’s last day with the Martins. They left this afternoon to fly back to Georgia. Hopefully, their flight made it out in this heavy fog.
This was supposed to be our last night in the Kodiak Inn. Our plans were to transfer to the Capella III to be on-board passengers of the sail boat.
The marine weather forecast is for 7 foot seas and high winds so St. Paul’s Harbor and the Kodiak Inn might be our home for a few more days.
Taking advantage of the facilities at the hotel, Gennie and Kathy washed clothes and Kathy used the internet to continue her Capella III blog.
While Kathy was busy inside, I took her bike for a spin around town. It is a great bicycle, a Dahon foldable bike with an all aluminum frame. These bikes are perfect for their sail boating adventures when they are in port and want to get around.
The premier event of the day was the traditional blessing of the fleet. The service was sung by the Russian Orthodox priests who sprinkled each passing vessel with Holy Water.
It was raining hard when we got to Pier 1 and by the time the services were over, most people said they thought they saw snow flakes in the air. The priests and choir sang fervently until the last boat passed by.
The Harbor Master threw the Memorial Day wreath to the final vessel in the fleet. Many people thanked us for coming to the ceremony, including two of the representatives from the Coast Guard, the Harbor Master, and one of the Orthodox Priests.
We came back to the room at 1:45 to dry off and warm up. I ironed a few shirts and Gennie started to type the journal and finished a book.
Having seen Don & Pat off, Vic, Kathy, Gennie and I met for dinner at the Peking Chinese Restaurant for a change of pace from seafood.
After dinner we went back to the Capella III for ice cream and then visited their friends a few slips away that have a trawler. Natasha and Josh from Tucson, AZ were very gracious to show us their boat. We also met Paul from Seattle, a wildlife photographer who showed us some of his work.
At 9:15 we left their boat and came back to the hotel to finish the journal and to post it to GarciaTrips for another busy day in Kodiak.
