Mayan Riviera

February 12, 2007 - Monday - Iberostar Paraiso del Mar

A horrendous thunderstorm came in at 6:00 this morning, with huge bolts of lightning and loud thunder! We were in for another tremendous rainstorm with the high wind gusts to go with it. We were amazed at the resilience of the jungle foliage as it sheds the heavy rain.

By the time we were out of the shower and on our way to breakfast, the storm had passed. Many of the gardens were flooded with water but that would soon be absorbed into the porous limestone.

We talked to Jesper and Ulla and the girls who were heading for the city of Playa del Carmen today. We knew the town as a sleepy fishing village at the end of the peer where the Cozumel Ferry docks. It is now a town of hundreds of thousands of people all who work to support the tourist industry.

After breakfast we walked over to the Convention Center as we had brought the computer and wanted to upload the journal from Day 5. While there we checked on the news from the US, had a chance to

e-talk to our son Eduardo, and get Gennie's University of Phoenix attendance posted.

Even though it was cloudy with a few sprinkles, we headed to the beach where there were plenty of empty chairs and palapas this morning. We found one with good shade and organized ourselves. There were two short rainsqualls and then miraculously, the cleared and the sun came out. We had a beautiful sunny day with clouds far in the horizon.

Gennie and I read, watched the people, spoke to many of the employees and at 1:30, got a little to eat. We continued to read during the afternoon and at 4:45 returned to our room to shower, work on the pictures and journal, and get ready for dinner 7 PM. Jesper came over at 5:45 to download some pictures into the computer so he would have a fresh memory card tomorrow on our excursion.

At 6 PM we walked over to the Main Lobby Bar and talked over the day with the Poulsens. We walked a short distance to the Rodizio Restaurant for our Brasilian dinner. At 9 PM Gennie and I returned to the Convention Center to upload today's journal as we will not have any time tomorrow and then returned home on Wednesday.
