Hawaii

Day 6 - Wednesday - May 19, 2004

We again had a lot of time this morning so we got up when we wanted - about 7:30. We took our time showering and dressing, but decided to go out and place towels on the lounge chairs by the pool.

We got there a few minutes early and had to wait for it to open at 8:30. We left two towels, our books and Gennie’s bag on the chairs and walked the beach sidewalk to have breakfast.

On the way we stopped at Atlantis and signed up for the 11 AM tour. They gave us a good deal so we took it, realizing we had a time commitment to deal with now. We decided to go back to Perry’s for their buffet and it was a little cooler today.

We hurried back to the hotel and went to our room and packed in 30 minutes. Not too difficult. We took our two bags, backpacks and Gennie’s carry-on to the bell boy stand and they stored our bags for us.

We went back to the pool and asked the people sitting by our chairs to watch our stuff while we were gone on the submarine tour for the hour and half. We walked over to the pier, checked in and were told to wait under an awning but with a good breeze.

We took the time to take some pictures of the hotel from the water, tried to photograph some fish and just watched people. Great number of Japanese!

At 11 we were taken into the ship, given a Coast Guard briefing and then we waited a little bit for a group that had not yet arrived. We were off by 11:10 for a 15 minute trip to the two subs. We were loaded on the 64 passenger craft, with all seats filled and we were off.

The trip took us to artificial reefs created by the University of Hawaii, a Japanese group, and several sunken vessels and an airplane. In all of these were beautiful fish.

On the large sunken vessel there were 5 very large green sea turtles sleeping. Because the red color of the spectrum does not go below the surface, everything looked like it was lit by a black light. Picture taking was very difficult. After 45 minutes we returned to the surface were we transferred back on the Discovery for the trip to the pier.

We returned to the pool where we sat for the rest of the afternoon reading our books and people watching. Pretty uneventful.

At 4 PM we went to the restroom, washed up a bit and changed into shorts to go and have dinner. We had decided to go back to the Singhai Thai Cuisine as they opened at 4 PM and had the best food.

We arrived and there were others already eating. Our waiter was very good, taking care of all our wishes and the food was again very tasty. At about 6 PM we returned to the hotel and sat and read until 6:30 when we got a key to the hospitality room Tapa Tower 357.

When we entered we saw that it had not been cleaned. I called and Gennie got a housekeeper to clean the room while we waited. We took a shower and got ready to go. We met our transportation at the hotel lot and Ilima took us to the airport.

Our driver was quite loud and loved to talk. We were entertained by his stories. When we got to the Honolulu International, we saw that the United line was long.

One had to first to go through a luggage check. Then to check in - we used the Premier line, then to leave off the luggage with TSA, then to go through security - but everyone was nice.

We finally got to Gate 8 where there was air conditioning and an electrical outlet for the computer. I was able to catch up on the logs and Gennie read.

We boarded with Seating 1 after the handicapped had entered. Again, one group of Orientals decided to try to get to the front of the line - there were about 6 of them and just walked up, past the line that had been standing for over 15 minutes. Naturally, I had to say something!

The flight was uneventful, we were in the air by 10 PM, Gennie and I read, and then we both tried to sleep. She got a little, I did not.

Just one of those nights. We arrived in Denver but the gate had an aircraft loading. We waited on the tarmac for about 20 minutes and at 8:50 we finally disembarked.

Walking and riding to get our luggage where we had to wait another 20 minutes. Interesting. We took the Pikes Peak Shuttle and got our car and drove home with a stop at Safeway to buy a few things.
