Hawaii

Day 2 - Saturday - May 15, 2004

We were up before the alarm - just after 6 AM. There was a heavy overcast and there was a lot of moisture in the air. We got ourselves ready, dressed and were out of the room by 7:45 to meet our hosts, Maui Divers Tours.

A little after 8 the tour bus arrived, we got in and were on our way. Our driver gave us a brief tour and pointed out the restaurants and city sights as we drove along. There was just another couple with us, from NJ.

We arrived at Maui Divers Tours facility and were asked to pose for a photo, and then taken upstairs. Our group was now six and it was a sales presentation on the tours they offered.

There was coffee and juice on the table and macadamia muffins. Not bad but for close to two hours we listened to Heidi give us their pitch. We decided to take an eco-flight over seven islands but when Heidi checked, they were booked. Instead we chose to rent a vehicle for $32 and do a tour of the island of Oahu. We will do that tomorrow.

When we were done we went downstairs and waited for a bus to take us to Hilo Hatties, a very large shop of a clothes maker known in Hawaii. We spent close to an hour there, bought Eduardo a gift, and then waited for the tour trolley to take us back to the hotel.

We had noticed that the heavy rainstorms occurred and then passed. It is a matter of judging these downpours. We got back to the hotel without getting too wet, went to our room, checked the email and then went out to lunch.

We decided on pizza at Round Table - prices were a little high as it is part of the hotel complex. As we were done it started to rain hard again so we waited it out and then went to check out some restaurants that had been pointed out to us, one a Thai and the other an all you can eat fish and sushi establishment.

We returned to our room to see how the afternoon would develop. About 2:30, the cloud cover broke and we went for a long walk down Waikiki Beach and the areas surrounding the hotel.

It was good to get out but it was warm, in the 80's and the humidity was quite high. I was able to take some pictures, chatted with some people and just walked the area.

We got back to the room, saw and wrote an email to our son Eduardo, we have a high speed connection, 24/7, and sorted the pictures we had taken. Gennie wrote postcards while I worked on the shots.

I then read and showered, and at 7 PM we left to have dinner at the Singha Thai Cuisine, across from the Hilton. We shared a nice salad with peanut sauce, then had pad thai with chicken and spicy vegetables with bamboo shoots and snow peas with shrimp. Both were very good and we enjoyed all three dishes.

While we ate we had Thai dancers entertaining us. A very pleasant evening. During dinner the heavy rains came again but when we were done it had passed and we were able to walk back on just wet streets.

We have been having trouble with our A/C. Last night and this morning they worked on getting it to cool the room below 74 degrees. It was better but we found it to be leaking water/condensation on to our bath counter. We called on this, they came over and fixed it.

Tonight, when we got home, it was leaking again. Lot of moisture in the air. We went to bed a little after 9:30 as we have to be out early tomorrow morning.
