Southern Peru-Bolivia Day 19

Day 19 - Thursday, November 13, 2014 - Fly to La Paz; Evening at Leisure

Pepé knocked on the door for our wake up call at 5:00 this morning. We had a little breakfast and then jumped back into the SUVs for one last ride to Uyuni to go to the airport.

Our flight was scheduled for 7:33 AM and by the time we had our bags checked in and received our boarding passes; it was time to load the flight. Another Amaszonas CRJ-200 Bombardier took us from Uyuni to La Paz in just over 45 minutes.

As we looked out of the window we could see the enormity of the salt flats and the outlines of the shores of the ancient sea. We both commented on the rugged and desolate terrain below.

When we arrived in La Paz, we gathered our luggage and were met by our old friend and driver, Juan Carlos who had the bus ready to take us back to the Radisson. It was cool and cloudy with a temperature of 45 degrees and the humidity was 33%.

We were scheduled to stay the morning in Uyuni and then take a later flight to La Paz but considering that we all had much to do to prepare for our flights home, it was decided by group consensus to take the early flight. When we arrived at the hotel, the rooms were not ready so we set up camp in the lobby.

The concierge took care of all of our bags and we used the extra time to check our mail and let our son know we were back in the city. A few went shopping, some just relaxed, and we began the journal.

We all met at noon in the lobby to have lunch together. We walked to Los Castores and had the famous Bolivian salteñas. A little smaller and a lot juicer than an empanada, they were very tasty.

We thanked Pepé and wished him well as he will take the first flight out in the morning to go home to Cusco, Peru. Five of us will take American flight 922 leaving at 9:05 AM.

As this is a transition day, there were no scheduled activities in La Paz. Once we had our rooms, we were able to retrieve the bags that we had stored five days ago before going on the post trip.

It did not take long to reorganize our two large bags and prepare for our Friday flight back to Denver by way of Santa Cruz, Bolivia and then home through Miami.

Once the journal was completed and our photos for the day were chosen, we could relax and get a good night’s sleep before our 5:00 wake up call in the morning.
