Wednesday, February 26, 2014 - Spring Trip to Austin, Texas – Lubbock to Abilene; I-20; Homes and Towns of the Hill Country; Austin
At 8:15 we were all packed and ready to leave Lubbock. There was no reason to wash the car, it was foggy and 23° and we knew we were heading south to rain.
Gas at the Chisholm Travel Center was $3.25. Not as bad as Colorado but higher than neighboring New Mexico. Our route took us southeast through Post, Snyder, and several dead-looking smaller towns.
At Roscoe we joined I-20 going east and were surprised to see several NASCAR semi-trucks all decked out in the commercial colors of their sponsors. They were driving west from the Dayton 500 this past weekend.
We left the interstate on US183 and traveled to Early for lunch and then on to Lampasas. Along the route we stopped to take photos of abandoned homes, opulent gates, a longhorn or two.
The scenic route 281 – but anything away from the interstate is much more scenic and interesting. Speeding along at 75 miles an hour is not as fun as exploring the back roads.
It was raining at 3:30 when we arrived at our son’s home in southwest Austin. We had time to settle in, get our Buddha some early dinner, and relax before Eduardo got home from work.
The next few days will be spent on “family time” but we promise to log back in on our return trip to Colorado as we stop to learn a bit more Texas History.
As always interesting. Have a great visit.
The most beautiful part of this godforsaken country is the sky, which wraps around you -- almost reaching your feet. (Close to where I grew up.)
That car lot in Rising Star - LOL Several of hose allover down there. Glad you saw a Texas Longhorn.

The hotel prepared a box breakfast for us as we had to be in the lobby way before the breakfast room was open.
Last night we found out that our departure flight back to...
