Day 06 - July 11, 2011 - Monday - Jackson Hole, WY – Return to Yellowstone

Today’s Journal is written by Ulla Poulsen, a Financial Advisor from Frederikssund, Denmark.

After having picked up sandwiches for the day we left the hotel at 8:20 and headed for Yellowstone. The temperature was 57f /11c.

We went through Grand Teton National Park and stopped two times to take photos. At 10:00 we entered Yellowstone. Around 11:00 we arrived at Old Faithful Inn. We waited for about 25 min. for Old Faithful to go off and it did almost at the time it was predicted. It is amazing to think about that nature does all this by its self.

We took off at 12 and went to see the Grand Prismatic Springs. The blue colors in the springs were very beautiful and it had a lot of warm stream coming up, which you could actually feel. We had lunch at a picnic place named Whiskey Flats - some bugs but no whiskey.

Next we stopped at the Lower Geyser Basin where we saw several geysers. We have not seen that many animals today so we started to look for them and decided that the next person that saw one should buy ice cream and right after we saw a lot of cars that had stopped. We first thought it was a wolf but the Ranger said it was a coyote.

The last geysers we went to see were in the Norris Geyser Basin. We saw the Steamboat Geyser that last had a major eruption in May 2005. A ranger told us that it was about 300 feet high and it lasted for 15 minutes and the steam lasted into the next day. The smaller eruptions one can see frequently are about 30-70 feet high and one is able to hear it a mile away.

On our way back we saw two big elks with really big antlers. We left Yellowstone at 5:20 and went back to Jackson.

Thank you Gen and Vic from all four of us for taking us on this great road trip. We really appreciate it.
