Day 03 - July 8, 2011 - Friday - Drive to Buffalo, WY; Black Hills and Devils Tower
Today’s Journal is written by Jesper Poulsen, an IBMer from Frederikssund, Denmark and former exchange student and soccer star at Lewis-Palmer High School.
We got up early, showered, finished packing, had breakfast and were on the road by 8:30 heading for Deadwood, South Dakota.
We arrived in Deadwood at 10:00. Deadwood is an old western town now living off gambling. Deadwood is also the town where Wild Bill Hickok was shot.
We visited Saloon No. 10 where he was shot and we saw the chair that he sat in when he got shot. The saloon had saw dust on the floor so we could have spat on the floor - which we didn’t - without getting kicked out.
It was 11:00 when we left Deadwood and headed for Devils Tower in Wyoming. We stopped at 13:00 at the Devil Towers View to have lunch. It was a very interesting place where they sold all kinds of souvenirs and served a good homemade meal. We had various burgers with beef, buffalo or chicken.
We arrived at the Devils Tower at 14:00. It is a very impressive rock formation. Much larger than any of us had expected. We walked on the 1.3 mile trail all around the rock and took lots of photos.
We left Devils Tower at 16:00 and arrived at our hotel in Buffalo at 18:15 - 15 minutes later than expected because we were pulled over by the police for speeding. Fortunately, the kind officer - who shall remain anonymous - was in a good mood and let us get away with a warning.
The Poulsens went to the swimming pool while the Garcias got updated on the rest of the world. We have been very fortunate with the weather so far on this trip but when we went out for dinner it was pouring down. The rain stopped just as we reached the Mexican Restaurant where we had decided to eat.
