Day 04 - July 9, 2011 - Saturday - Drive to Cody, WY – Scenic Drive Big Horn National Wilderness Area - Buffalo Bill Historical Center
We woke up to a beautiful morning in Buffalo, WY. The day was bright and clear and the temperature was 66º. The Great American Road Trip Crew is settling into a regular routine.
Since the Poulsens are going to go to the rodeo tonight in Cody and were getting in late, Gennie volunteered to write the journal in place of Cecilie today.
After we had breakfast and packed the car, we were out of the parking lot at 8:30. Not knowing about gas prices in the remote towns ahead, we got gas across from the hotel for $3.43/gallon.
Today’s route took us on US Hwy 16 west and south to Thermopolis and then west to Cody over the Cloud Peak Scenic Highway. There were several construction projects going on that slowed traffic to a dead stop.
Not more than 20 miles from Buffalo we stopped to take photos of the gorgeous wild flowers covering the meadows in the Bighorn National Wilderness Area. With all of the snow fall this winter (over 200% of normal) and all of the rains this summer, Wyoming is blooming!
At 9,666 feet we reached the summit of Powder River Pass. The temperature was 57º but there were still huge snow drifts near the hundreds of 12 foot high snow fences at the crest of the mountain.
At Ten Sleeps, we stopped for a coffee and restroom break. We made a decision to forego the trip down to Thermopolis and we continued directly north to Greybull, and then west to Cody.
We arrived at Cody at 12:30 and went straight to the Visitor’s Center where the Poulsens bought tickets for the Cody Rodeo. After lunch at Pizza Hut, we spent the rest of the afternoon at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.
This incredible museum truly celebrates the history of the West. The major exhibits include Buffalo Bill, the largest American firearms collection in the world, and authentic displays of Plains Indian artifacts.
At 4:00 we met back at the entrance and drove to the local Albertson’s to get food for a picnic lunch in Yellowstone tomorrow. We checked into the hotel, found our rooms, and began writing and selecting photos for the journal.
Poulsens went to the Cody Rodeo and we walked around the town and had dinner. We watched the other tourists, especially the bikers who rumbled down Main Street on their own Great American Road Trips!
