Day 17 – Saturday, May 15, 2010 – Visit Tabor, Czech Republic on to Horn and then to Vienna, Austria Vienna Palace Concert
This was our last day on the bus; it has become our home away from home. We rotated through the seats and today were back in the last row of seats with Pat and James, exactly where we started.
The porters did not bring the luggage carts out until 7:40 which made Eva and Paul rush to check off each bag as they did each travel day. While they worked with the porters, I took a weather reading, it was 53º and 73% humidity.
We said good-bye to Prague at 8:00 and traveled through Southern Bohemia, making a short stop in Tabor and then on to Vienna.
Eva passed around the map once more to show us we would be traveling in a south, southeast direction to complete our journey. She challenged us one more time to estimate the total length of our journey in kilometers.
We made our mid morning stop in a medieval town of Tabor, once the headquarters of the 15th century religious reformer, John Huss. We walked to the city center with Eva and then we were on our own for 45 minutes.
We found most shops either closed because it was Saturday or they did not take Euros, only Czech currency. I wanted to take a few photos of the back streets so we walked and found many quaint homes on the cobblestone streets.
Eva gathered us all back at the fountain at 10:10 and we walked back to the bus together. On this last day, she did not want to lose anyone!
Back on the road again, Eva asked us general impressions of the trip, and then passed out the Trafalgar Comment sheets to fill out as we made our way back to Vienna.
Our lunch stop was the little town of Horn in Austria; we parked in a shopping center and were given 45 minutes for lunch. The options were limited but several of us found a McDonald’s – imagine coming all the way to Austria for a Big Mac!
Safe and sound, we arrived back at the Hilton in Vienna at 2:30, having traveled 3,914 Kilometers. François from South Africa was the winner of the prize; a model of a Fantastic Plastic Soviet made car, the Trabant.
We took time to reorganize our bags for our flight tomorrow and then got ready for the Farewell Dinner at 5:30. At 7:30 we got on the bus for the last optional activity, a concert of Viennese classical music.
The concert included works of Mozart and Strauss and was preformed at the Auersperg Palais. The concert was very lovely and having center front row seats made the experience even more meaningful.
A few of us have early flights tomorrow and there were concerns about the ash cloud again as well as the British Air strike. We said goodbye to our new travel friends and posted the journal. When we get home on Sunday the 16th we will update the website and conclude the Highlights of Eastern Europe.
