The Northern Isles

Day 12 – Monday, July 21, 2003 – ms Rotterdam – At Sea

We saw several Dolphins last night at about 10:00 PM - they are enjoying this late sun also! We made a bet at dinner that we might have to change times again, and wouldn’t you know it we did!

We had a great night’s sleep, even when the wind began to blow and the ship began to toss. About 3 AM the ship began to rock much more that it has during this whole trip.

By 7:30 when we got up, we had heard that the wind was very strong outside and that people should be careful when going outside the ship. By 9 PM the wind had died and by noon we were steaming through very calm seas. There are scattered clouds and some sunshine.

Gennie and I got on the net and downloaded messages from people who are getting our notes and sent out the latest messages (Day 11 and the imbedded pictures). We also replied to Eduardo at RPI as he is taking the second part of the summer term as he tries to finish his undergraduate work by December.

We met Bob and Susan at 10:30 to go over and sort their digital pictures that I had downloaded onto the computer. We also discussed what we planned to do tomorrow at Oban, Scotland.

It is our plan to go on a tour of a whisky distillery and then travel to Luss and then see a castle at Inverary. We would then return to Oban to see the local sights.

At 12 Noon we ate a quick lunch in the Lido and then went to the Wajang Theater to see Gods and Generals, a 3:36 long film on the Civil War history of Stonewall Jackson.

The Southern perspective of the movie is different and the portrayal of President Lincoln is the that of the worn stereotype of a non-caring Northerner. The portrayal of the Northern generals were much more realistic.

At 4, we returned to our room to work on this journal and to try to get ready for the next few days. We will not have any days at sea from now on so we need to prepare for the day trips.

We went to the excursion office and signed up for day trips at Belfast (Giant’s Causeway and Antrim coast) and Cobh, Ireland (Cork, Blarney Castle & Blarney Woolen Mills). We will see how things go and then sign up for Guernsey, Le Havre, and Dover.

We went to dinner at the Pinnacle again tonight at 7 PM. It is by sign-up and there is a special charge. But the food is worth it. The restaurant used to be upscale Italian but Holland America, based out of Seattle, decided 4 months ago to make it a Northwest cuisine.

The dinner was super again. We all had the FILET MIGNON and like last time, we could cut it with our forks. Crab Cakes appetizer and Thai soup - yum!

We then went to the center of the ship so Bob and Susan could write a note to everyone using my computer. That worked well.

Once they were done we got on the net and within 10 minutes they got responses. I guess people in the states are still working. It is 10:02 PM here so it is 6 in NY and 3 in Seattle.
