Smittys-Lockhart, TX

Day 01 – Friday, November 26, 2010 – Trip to Lockhart, Texas and Lunch at Smitty’s Market – PART 2

Leaving Smitty’s Barbecue, we visited the Caldwell County Court House which was built in 1894 and is said to be the most photographed court house in the state.

The town library is also a tourist attraction as is the Baker Theater. Gennie was asking a gentleman about the old building, now under reconstruction and he unselfishly gave us a tour of the building.

Once a Vaudeville Theater we saw the inner workings of backstage, the orchestra pit, and original graffiti of artists and crew who worked there in the 1930’s including Shirley MacLaine.

While Eduardo consulted with a gentleman from the town about the music video, we enjoyed a self-guided tour of Lockhart. We visited the old County Jail which is now the county museum.

We wound our way back to Austin by the same back roads and saw a ranch with exotic African animals including a zebra.

We stopped for a little home improvement shopping at Lowe’s and Home Depot. There were a few late shoppers but it was much better than fighting the crowds at the beginning of the day. The right choice for us, for sure!
