Smittys-Lockhart, TX

Day 01 – Friday, November 26, 2010 – Trip to Lockhart, Texas and Lunch at Smitty’s Market – PART 1

Black Friday when most of the people in the USA were shopping for early Christmas bargains, the Garcias drove south to Caldwell County and Lockhart, Texas.

Lockhart was only about 40 minutes south and east of Austin by the back roads through flat cattle and small ranch country. Eduardo was scouting contacts for filming a music video so we mixed his business and our pleasure for the day.

Lockhart was once an origin of the Chisholm Trail; cattle were driven to the nearest railroad station in St. Joseph, Missouri as early as 1866.

Now Lockhart is the self proclaimed BBQ Capital of Texas. We parked on one of the few streets in downtown and admired the historic bindings.

Our first priority was lunch at Smitty’s Market – once a General Store, now one of the most unique and delicious BBQ places in Texas, let alone Lockhart!

We ordered and paid for our meat at the fire pit and then went inside to sit at long tables. Our plates were pieces of butcher paper and we were issued a plastic knife and told to eat with our hands!

After devouring beef brisket, sausage, pork chops, ribs, beans and coleslaw, we decided to walk around to take in the city.
