Turkeys M Hideaways

Day 14 - 04/20/06 Cruise to Gocek Bay

We had enough hot water for two quick "Navy Showers" this morning and are learning the ways of conservation at sea. While I had breakfast, Gennie did a little work on the journal from yesterday.

This morning we had a short sail around the cove and then the Captain let us off in Gocek Bay, a center of yachting on the Turquoise Coast, lined with small coves and ringed with pine-clad mountains. We went ashore to discover a new hike into the town of Gocek, a beautiful, modern city with a wealthy marina, shops, cafes, and exclusive facilities for their European clientele. Our hike took about two hours along a coastal gravel road. It was a good walk for exercise, but as Melton said, it was just for the hike, no ruins today.

We walked into the town of Gocek, where we saw the expensive and sleek yachts and other gullets being readied for the sailing season. As we had not been on the internet for 3 days, we stopped at a small "Fast Internet" café to upload the journals for the past three days and to check our mail. It was great to be back in touch with the world, if only for 30 minutes.

We met our group at 1:00 at the public dock where again, our faithful Mustafa ferried us back to the gulet for lunch. This was Murat's last meal with us as he flew back to Istanbul in the afternoon. Gennie rode back to town with them in the dingy and bought a bag of candy treats for the crew. The ones I had bought three days ago, have disappeared - a good idea to remember the next time we travel to bring from home.

At 3:00, the Captain raised the anchor and we were off to our next destination. The sun was hot during our walk, but when we started moving on the sea again, we needed our jackets. We sailed under the power of the engines as we have for our whole stay aboard the Senkaya. But about 3:30 as we got further out of the bay, and away from the islands, the crew unfurled the sail and actually sailed under wind power for about an hour. Sailing under these low wind conditions is tough, and it was not long before we had slowed down so much we were hardly moving. The Captain asked us if we were OK with starting the engines again, so in a few minutes we were back to our reliable diesel power.

Gennie asked to go down into the galley to watch our cook, Mehmet at work. We took turns going into the small, cramped steamy kitchen to see where these culinary delights come from. It was amazing to see where he performs his magic to feed all 12 of us 3 times a day!

While I worked on pictures, and others read or rested, we made our way into another quiet cove for the night. Watching the crew ready the gulet for anchor and a secure stay is very informative. We have all developed a new respect for sailors.

At 5:30 we were served tea and cookies as we enjoyed the late afternoon sun on the rear deck. The captain turned on the generator for hot water so we could prepare for dinner. Dinner was a special local fish which turned out to be one of the best we ever had.

After dinner and dessert we went into the lounge and Meltem was open for any questions we had about Turkey. It was very enlightening to understand the culture and manner of the people we are visiting. At 10 PM we said goodnight and turned in.
