The Best of Portugal

Day 3 - September 5, 2002 - Lisbon to Albufeira (2)

We had gotten the wake up call at 7, luggage out by 7:45 and then breakfast. Breakfast at the hotel was excellent. The bread was great as was the cheese and the coffee was very dark just the way I like it. Gennie had some eggs and bacon but the latter was like jerky.

We were at the bus by 8:30 and the rotation is going to be simple. Move up two rows every day. We left the city as we crossed the River Tagus along the Bridge of the 25th April, recalling the 1974 Revolution, and headed toward the Serra Arrabida Mountains.

We saw the Castle of Palmela as we drove via Setúbal to the Valley of the River Sado. The mountain range here is about 1,000 feet high and we had nice views of the coast and the beaches below.

We stopped several times and took pictures. Our tour guide Miguel Palma is very intelligent, as he speaks about the country, but also knows the technical terms for the flora and fauna and has a wide understanding.

Just inside the city of Setubal we stopped by the post office and while we were taking pictures, two ladies wondered off and did not come back. We waited and finally Miguel sent us to the city center and he waited for the two.

We were able to go to a market like in Mazatlan, Mexico - indoors with all sort of fish, fruits, vegetables and many other things. We walked around the city, took pictures and had about 45 minutes.

We were back en route to Albufeira on the Algarve via one of their brand new highways - 25 Euros for toll for the bus. We will be spending two relaxing days and nights at the Montechoro Hotel overlooking the city.

Tonight, we went to Quinta Da Saude for a Portuguese specialties dinner in a restaurant 30 minutes from town. Dinner was more English than Portuguese but I had the swordfish and Mom had the pork tenderloin.

We got home about 9:45 and a couple of members went to a bullfight. We went to find an internet place and finally found one about a mile form the hotel We got home about 10:45 and I finished the Journal update and we were in bed by 11.
