Azores & Madeira: Portugal's Unspoiled Archipelagos
Day 01 - Monday, April 10, 2023 – Fly to Munich, Germany – Connect to Lisbon, Portugal
We left snowy Colorado springtime behind and we are on our way across the Atlantic to Lisbon and the Portuguese archipelagos of the Azores and then Madeira. Discovered by the Portuguese navigators in the early 1400’s, these volcanic island chains are noted for their laid-back atmosphere and beautiful unspoiled environment.
During the Age of Exploration, one hundred years before Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil, Vic’s home country, the Portuguese settled these islands far into the Atlantic. Not afraid of falling off of the edge of the world, these hearty and fearless navigators from Portugal discovered our next destinations.
Our Lufthansa flight from Denver to Munich was scheduled to leave at 4:10 pm. After a brief layover in Germany, we will fly to Lisbon. We will catch up with you again after checking in to our hotel and beginning our next journey of GarciaTrips.
This adventure will take us to a new part of the Atlantic as well as let us enjoy a relatively unpopulated and rural culture. Exploring the sea routes of Magellan, Cabral, Vasco da Gama, Cabrilho, and many more, we are excited to be explorers ourselves. Vic is especially anxious to practice his Portuguese.

I am looking forward to reading about your island adventures. My family is from the Azores and Madeira. I went to the Azores in 2019 with family and absolutely loved it! The scenery is breathtaking. Madeira is still on my list. Hopefully I can convince Tim to join me after he reads about your experience.

Beautiful snow pictures!! Looking forward to your adventures. I wonder if Vic will find that his Portuguese has changed from what is currently spoken as I found in Finland. My Finn was the way it was spoken by my grandparents in early1900s. Many words and phrases had changed. It was interesting.
How lovely to see the pics of the snow! We mostly just dream of the snow, here in Seattle... Have a wonderful adventure...have fun with the Portuguese language...and take lots of pictures. Bob and I both look forward to your posts!
