Walking Tour Provence

Day 9 - Saturday, May 4, 2013 - Walk to Cap Ferrat and Cote d'Azur with View of the Mediterranean, Afternoon Time on Our Own, Farewell Dinner

We had a later start today; the alarm was to go off at 7:00 but the sun woke us up at 6:20. It was good not to have to rush as we had had a short night after getting back from Monaco at 10:20 and then posting the journal after 12:30 this morning. Sometimes we wonder why we do this to ourselves???

After breakfast we met the group at 9:00. Today was the last day we would see Gianni as he is going back to Florence today. We thanked him for getting us all to and from safely.

Gianni took us to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat in the bus, and the Jean Sébastien led the way as we set out on our walk. The hiking trail hugs the side of the rock walls over the sea. There were incredible views of the coast line as well panoramas to take ones breath away!

We met Saturday joggers; we saw people snorkeling, as well as divers, all looking for lost treasure. The Cote d’Azur was once a pirate haven. The homes in this peninsula that juts out into the Mediterranean are opulent – according to many, the real estate is second in value only to Monaco!

The walk was only about 90 minutes, but it was up and down the cliff side, so our hearts were pumping when we finished the hike at 10:45. Gianni picked us up and took us to the Saturday market in the lower part of the city.

Hundreds of local people were buying fresh food for their weekend meals and then there were the thousands of tourists getting in their way taking photos! I bet we are a challenge to the people who live and work in Nice.

We looked around and tried to be as unobtrusive as possible. At 1:00 we began walking back to the hotel. We followed the tram tracks knowing the tram stops only a block from the NH Nice.

There were many little cafes and sandwich shops along the way. We bought a sandwich and soda and enjoyed the Saturday afternoon picnic in the sun. There was a cool sea breeze so it did not seem as warm as 71°. The humidity was 64%.

Back at the hotel we reviewed photos, Gennie typed the journal, and then we repacked our bags for our journey home tomorrow. We did not linger after our farewell dinner as our wake-up call will be at 3:30.

Our flight from Nice to Amsterdam leaves at 6:25 in the morning. Our journey home will take us from Amsterdam to Minneapolis, and then home to Denver. We will complete the narrative of our 23 day adventure when we arrive home on Sunday, May 5.

On the last day of our Walking Tour of Provence we walked 7.6 miles.
