Quest for the Waters

Day 02 - September 29, 2011 - Thursday - Thermopolis, WY; Drive to Palmer Divide, CO

We woke up to another clear day in Thermopolis and had a very inclusive breakfast. We borrowed spa towels at the front desk and walked two blocks to the State Bath House.

The temperature was cool about 58 degrees so the walk was refreshing. The attendant at the desk of the Hot Springs told us about the rules and the therapeutic values of the hot water and many minerals.

There is an indoor pool as well as a large outdoor facility and we chose to go outside in the fresh morning air. At this early hour in the morning we were the only tourists, but the locals were there in full force with coffee mugs in hand.

The time limit for soaking in the mineral springs is only 20 minutes and the time is strictly regulated. Poaching in the 104 degree waters for too long can be hazardous to your health. As we talked to the residents of Thermopolis, they described incidents of people passing out in the water or as they walked back into the bathhouse.

By the time our 20 minutes were up, we were ready to get out – the smell of sulfur and the minerals do have a draining effect on one’s system. We took a quick shower and then walked back to the hotel, took a real shower, and packed our bags for home.

As we drove out of Thermopolis we stopped several times in the Wind River Canyon to take photos. We also stopped in the Boysen Reservoir at Boysen State Park.

The drive home over the high plains was uneventful, but we did see many pronghorn antelope along the roadside fences and the tall 20 foot snow fences.

We ate a quick lunch in Casper, got gas, and then continued on I-25 south back to Colorado and then home on E-470 to avoid the evening rush hour traffic.

We ended our two day 900 miles road trip and were back at Elephant Rock by 6:00.
