Day 01 – Monday, November 22, 2010 – Trip to Texas and Visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park – PART 2
Winding through the many campsite, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks, we made many stops along the route. When we came to Goodnight’s Dugout we were amazed to see this very small mud and log home where Charles Goodnight lived in 1876.
Around each bend there were even more spectacular views of rock formations. The blue skies were a vivid contrast to the variegated reds in the rock cliffs.
We spent about two and a half hours in the park driving and hiking through the red rock canyons which were part of Col. Charles Goodnight’s JA Ranch, at one time over a million acres.
As we left the park we made a stop at the Pioneer Amphitheater, an outdoor natural red rock auditorium where historical musicals and chuck wagon dinners are held during the summer evenings.
Back on I-27 we continued south to Lubbock and to the Best Western where we spent the night. We had dinner at Harrigan’s which was highly recommended but not spectacular.
We came back to the room and I sorted our photos from the day and Gennie worked on her class and typed the journal while we watched the Broncos who were playing on Monday Night Football. Sort of…..
After a good night’s sleep we drove the remainder of the way to Austin to join our son Eduardo for Thanksgiving.
There is also a rock formation called the "Lighthouse" which is about as famous as the "Kissing Camels". It is about a 2 hour hike in the canyon but I've heard it is great. Maybe something for the next trip... Hope you all are great. Take care.
