Day 01 – Monday, October 11, 2010 – Trip to Southern Colorado’s Highway of Legends – PART 1
What a wonderful fall day for a day trip to Southern Colorado! We left home at 9:09 under cloudy skies and about 46°. We made a brief stop at Costco for gas and we were on our way south on Interstate 25.
There was a dusting of snow on Pikes Peak and the golden cottonwood trees along Fountain Creek were a stark contrast to the dry grasslands as we reached Pueblo. The temperature was 63° and the sun was breaking through the puffy clouds.
Our son Eduardo had told us about an interesting sight along the route he took on his drive home to Austin, Texas a few weeks ago. We stopped at Exit 64 on County Road 650 in Huerfano County.
There was a line of about 50 mail boxes used by families who lived back in the foothills. We stopped to take a few pictures of rural Colorado, the mailboxes, yucca, and sage brush.
Back on I-25, we passed the tiny extinct Huerfano Volcano and continued south on US Highway 160 into Walsenburg and then west and south through fantastic vistas of the Spanish Peaks and the Sangre de Cristo Range.
We left the highway and took CO State Road 12 or the Highway of Legends, Scenic Byway finding ourselves back in the Colorado Territorial times of cattle, windmills, and homesteads of the early days of this valley along the Cuchara River.
We passed through the tiny town of La Veta at lunch time and saw a crowd at the Main Street Diner. We asked two bicyclers if they had enjoyed their meal and they raved about the down-home cooking!
I had the Monday Special, a spicy smoked burger and Gennie chose ½ Ruben – both coming with homemade fries and onion rings. Great for clogging up our arteries!
We did not linger after lunch as so many people were trying to get in to the small 8 table café. This was another great choice and lucky stop for us.
Back on the road we drove through deer and elk hunting pastures, scrub oak, and cottonwoods. Higher in the slopes we could see the golden aspen.
Wow, great views. Not to be confused with the fabulous views in Iowa!! Isn't Fall wonderful?
I was just thinking this weekend that we hadn't heard from you guys. Thought maybe you were tripped out. I love your route, and hasn't it been gorgeous in the hills the last few weeks!
Post a Comment!Another greater adventure. I look forward to your daily reports and pictures
