Best Kenya & Tanzania

Day 02 - Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - Flight - Amsterdam to Nairobi, Kenya

Just as the sun was setting on Detroit we took off and headed north and east along the Canadian coast and out over the pitch black ocean. Our seats on the Airbus A330 were 38 A and B; carrying us and 250 other souls across the Atlantic on our 8 hour journey.

A new sunrise greeted us over the North Sea and just a few hours later we arrived in Amsterdam at 9:05 in the morning, docking at the E Concourse. Because we were so far in the back of the aircraft, it took awhile to deplane.

Our itinerary predicted an hour and ten minute layover, so we hustled right to our gate which was on the F Concourse. We would have loved to spend more time here in Amsterdam, one of our favorite cities.

I had to keep Gennie moving quickly past the shops featuring the blue and white Delft pottery. There was another complete security screening at the gate before we boarded our flight to Nairobi, Kenya.

As soon as the few remaining passengers boarded and stored their bags, we took off right on time at 10:15AM. This flight had 90 empty seats so the flight attendant told us we could move about as soon as the seatbelt sign was turned-off.

I had scouted out a whole empty row of three so we moved to more comfortable quarters for our next 8 hour flight. The crew of this KLM 577 was very accommodating and took excellent care of us as we crossed over Europe and then south into Africa.

Although Gennie’s window seat was over the wing she could still see the immense expanse of the Sahara Desert. She told me she actually saw the set of the Star Wars movie we had visited in Tunisia last spring – RIGHT…

There was quite a bit of paper work to complete for our entry into Kenya. The longest and most comprehensive was a document verifying we were not sick with the N1H1 Swine Flu. While I filled out the two forms for each of us, Gennie caught up on the journal for the day.

When we landed in Nairobi at 7:25 PM we were greeted by customs and immigration. We had pre-purchased our $25 entry visa so that saved us from standing in one more line.

As we left the official government area I had a chance to get a few dollars in local money, the Kenyan Shilling. We will be using at least 6 different types of currency on this trip so we will have to plan our finances carefully.

Our Trip Leader, Barikiel and Elizabeth, our OAT Rep met us with a bright yellow OAT sign and handled our transfer to the hotel. We did not see too much of the city, all we could think of was a shower and a clean bed for the night after our 29 hours of traveling, door to door.

Accommodations: InterContinental Nairobi - - - Meal: B, L, D
