Colorado Peak to Peak

Peak to Peak, Colorado Day 1 continued - Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - Monument, CO back Home

We stopped for lunch at the Back Country Pizza Café in Nederland. By 1:00 we were on our way north on C-72. The valleys were carpeted with aspen, but most of them were just turning. Every few miles we stopped to take pictures. Colorado is so beautiful in the early Fall!

We took a little side trip to explore the small hamlet of Ward. Not quite a ghost town, Ward does seem to be the home of many “antique vehicles” just waiting to be restored!

We stopped to take photos of Longs Peak, at 14,259 feet (4,346 m) - what an impressive mountain! It is the mountain chosen as the image for the design for the Colorado State Quarter.

We reached Estes Park at about 2:20. We drove around the town a bit but did not see one of their famous elk! Knowing that traffic would begin to accumulate, we drove east to Lyons and then on to I-25. It only took us about 2 hours to get back to Elephant Rock and our fantastic view of Pikes Peak again.
