Day 1 - Saturday & Sunday, November 20 & 21, 2004 - Flight
On Saturday afternoon Gennie was in constant communication with Charlie and Sylvia Emmons who were going to travel with us. We were concerned with the weather and the forecast snow that was supposed to hit us on Saturday night and Sunday. Gennie made reservations for a Park and Fly package at Days Inn at Tower Road, just 10 minutes from the airport.
We left at 6PM, picked up Charlie and Sylvia and we were off. The roads out of Colorado Estate were very slippery but we made it out to I-25 and had no real problems at the way to Denver. At Park Meadows the road got wet and slushy but we had no problems. We checked into the hotel and found that we could park for 21 days, stay all night, have breakfast in the morning, and then take their shuttle to the airport.
After checking in, we walked across Tower Road to Bennigans for dinner. Charlie and Sylvia elected to stay in. As we had been traveling back from Iowa the night before, we turned in early, 9 PM, to get a few hours of sleep.
Sunday morning, November 21, came early as our wake up call was at 5:15 and we met C & S in the breakfast room at 6 AM. By 6:30 we were checked out of our room and we were on the local hotel shuttle bus heading to DIA. It had not snowed anymore there, so we had no problems leaving although we watched some earlier flights being de-iced.
Our plane had been on the early morning sunshine. Check in and security at the airport went very smoothly, so we had plenty of time to get to our gate on our first leg of the United trip to Dulles.
Our connection in Dulles was brief, we got off the plane at Gate 17 and got on the plane at Gate 18. This was really different - we did not have to run around the terminal. Our short United Express flight to JFK in New York went without a hitch! Easy for us world travelers...
Enter the huge new world of JFK and NYC! We landed at Terminal 7 and there were NO SIGNS!!! guiding us to connecting flights, nor were there any people to ask for directions. I finally found a United agent who directed us to the Air Train that would take us to Terminal 4. "You can't miss it." Famous last words!
We took the Air Train but somehow got on the outbound and ended up at Hampton Station - not even in the terminal, heading toward Staten Island. We recognized our error, got off the train, crossed the platform and took the inbound back to the airport and terminals. We found Terminal 4 easily and went directly to Egypt Air to check in and get seat assignments.
The ticket agent told us that we had aisle seats. We were also told that the flight was wide open and we probably could sit anywhere. At our gate everyone had to go through another baggage check and security and waited a bit for the flight to board. We did see the early NFL scores and that the Broncos had a convincing victory (score wise) over the N.O. Saints.
We boarded early and then waited on the tarmac for over an hour for the plane to take off. Unfortunately, our two assigned seats were in the center of the middle section. But our flight was indeed spacious, so Gennie and I moved to the rear of the aircraft where there were several open seats. Gennie took a row of three and I a row of four and we were able to stretch-out.
