Can you ever get enough Texas BBQ? As this was the meat lovers trip to Austin, TX, the answer is a definite NO! A trip to Austin is not complete without a drive out to the Capital of Texas Highway and a meal at Rudy’s.
“But”, you say, “there is a Rudy’s in Colorado Springs. Why drive all the way to Central Texas?”
We are here to tell you, it is not the same – not the same ambience, not the same menu, nor the same flavor of the smoked meat. We have talked to both managers about the flavor and the answer seems to be in the live oak used in the Austin smoker, not the standard mesquite wood.

Originated in the little town of Leon Springs, this Texas Hill Country favorite has grown into a franchise in many locations in Texas and now it is spreading throughout the South and West. Founded in the 1800's the owner’s son, Rudolph, opened a one-stop gas station, garage, and grocery store. After the BBQ was added, many people forget you can actually buy gas at Rudy’s.
The barn-like seating area tends to get a bit noisy during the busiest times and weekends are crowded. There are many large groups but there is an outside picnic area and a playground making Rudy’s popular with multi-generational families.
As you start to snake through the long line be sure to tell the staff if this is your first visit as they will make a screaming big deal and offer you samples of all of the meats they serve. This is a BBQ tasting that is worth forgetting you have never been to Rudy’s; winky, winky!
Our standard favorites are the lean brisket, moist brisket, smoked turkey, and the spicy jalapeno sausage for Eduardo and Vic. And for Gennie, it is the St. Louis style pork ribs! The sides are homemade goodness; Vic loves the creamed corn and cole-slaw and Eduardo and Gennie have the potato salad.
Typical of casual dining, the meals are served on butcher paper. Bread, onions, and dill pickles are complimentary. Our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs, and we always seem to order more than we can eat. However, having left overs for sandwiches the next day is a good thing.
