Day 2 – November 19, 2017 – Abuelo’s, The Flavor of Mexico
Many people have asked us about the meals we eat as we travel. We will try to give some insights into a few of our Texas favorites. Although we do not claim to be "food critics", we will share our experiences just in case you are ever in this part of Texas or you just want to follow our culinary adventures.

Beginning in 1989, the first Abuelo's Mexican restaurant opened in Amarillo, Texas. As stated in their website, the founders' goal was simple; to serve delicious, made-from-scratch Mexican food at every day prices in a casual, comfortable setting.
Now with 39 restaurants located in 13 states throughout the nation, mainly in Texas, Abuelo's has been one of our favorite stops on the way to Austin.
On a busy Sunday evening we were able to get a table for two right away. At 5:30 there were many families and groups of six to eight people waiting to be seated before going home to watch the Dallas Cowboys play. Little did they know...
Our server, Anna welcomed us and kept our chip basket full. She explained the three varieties of salsa; Gennie stayed with the traditional mild red with a hint of smoky flavor. Vic experimented with the extra hot salsa and really enjoyed the green tomatillo with pineapple that was sweet but had a definite late hit.
Our beverages were brought out quickly. Abuelo's regular 14 oz margarita is one of Vic's top three worldwide and that is saying a lot!
The menu was varied but primarily devoted to Tex-Mex dishes. Since our last visit they have added a Tapas, or small bite selections of appetizers. Gennie chose the fajita salad with steak and Vic had two chili rellenos, one with the spicy ranchera sauce and the other with chile con queso.
The dinner selections were very generous and under normal circumstances we would have asked for Doggie Bags and had another meal to take home. We did our best to finish but when Anna asked if we wanted desserts, she was smiling. With such large portions, none of the people around us ordered dessert either.
Our overall dining experience was very pleasant and well worth coming back to Abuelo's in Lubbock, Texas.
I'm drooling over the Steak Fajita Salad, but it's enough for the both of us. Happy Thanksgiving & Safe Travels, always.
Oh wow! I am ready to eat but there are none here in New Jersey. This was a great post. More to come?
YUM!
