S2000 Colorado Sunday Drive - August 14, 2005
On Sunday, August 14, 2005, several members of the Rocky Mountain S2000 Owners from the S2K International met at the Loaf & Jug in north Golden.
Gennie and I left our home on top of the Palmer Divide at 9:35 and after an hour we met Kyle, Luc, Denver, and Scott & Stephanie in Golden. We decided to take US 285 west as I-70 had had a major rock slide by Idaho Springs.
At 11:10, the group set off driving south on US 6 to C-470 and then turned west on US 285. As we drove through the foothills the cloud cover that had been over Colorado for the last four days dissipated and we had a beautiful sunny day.
As it was Sunday there was a great deal of traffic both coming and going. We went through Conifer, Shawnee, Grant, Jefferson, and then to the north end of South Park and the city of Fairplay.
We turned west on Colorado 9 and went through Fairplay, then through Alma, where a speed trap was set up to catch the tourists driving through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
When we reached the top of Hoosier Pass we stopped, stretched our legs, and took some pictures of the five cars at 11,542 feet of altitude.
We drove down through the switch backs and the Blue River arriving in Breckenridge around 1:30. As we cruised down Main Street we had people yelling and waving at us.
We stopped in a city parking lot on N. Ridge Street and crossed the street to have lunch at Fatty’s Restaurant where we sat in the sun and enjoyed each others company, the beautiful vistas with the ski runs, and the good meal.
Alan, who had just driven from Steamboat Springs, joined us at the restaurant.
A little after 3 PM we left Breckenridge, drove north with the Blue River to our left, on our way to Frisco.
We turned east on US 6 and drove to Keystone and then up to Loveland Pass. We once again parked our S2000s and enjoyed the scenery and crisp thin air at 11,990 feet.
We saw two daredevil mountain bikers take off cross country, down the mountain side. We would see them again at the bottom, waving and shouting at us, when we passed on our way to Denver.
Once we got on I-70, we were able to make some time but as soon as we got to Georgetown, the traffic was backed up due to some major rock slides on I-70.
We tried to find some side roads but were turned back as the Colorado Department of Transportation was blasting trying to clear the interstate.
As the back-up was close to 15 miles long, I decided to return to Breckenridge and go through Fairplay, Hartzel, Woodland Park, and Colorado Springs to return home at 7:15.
The others went to Denver by way of I-70 fighting the major traffic jam.
