Colonial Cartagena, CO

Day 06 - Monday, December 27, 2010 - Flight from Cartagena, to Miami, to Denver, Colorado, Home

Our wake-up call came at 4:40 and after our last minute packing and a light breakfast, we met David and Jose and our group. The airport was only 15 minutes from the hotel and we said good-bye and thanked Jose.

David stayed with us as we stood in line while we went through our first security. Our bags were randomly searched. My bag was thoroughly rummaged from corner to corner. I thought the agent had put things back in pretty good order, but when I got home to unpack I found I was missing my Stearn raincoat and my slippers.

Gennie went on ahead and checked in with the gate agents and got our seat assignments. After we checked our bags we passed through another security to get into the gate area. This time they went through each pocket and container in our carry-on bags.

We still had plenty of time before we boarded and there were several WiFi connections. Gennie wrote a note to our son and let him know we were on our way home.

As they called the flight we went through one more bag check at the jet-way. By that time we knew we were all safe and drug-free to fly back to the USA.

The flight attendants greeted our Avianca Airbus 320 at 9:00 and we were off the ground in only a few minutes. The flight had come from Bogotá so it was almost full when we got on.

We did have a spare seat in our row, giving us extra room. The flight was short, less than three hours, flying directly north over Jamaica and Cuba.

After we landed at 11:45 we went through US immigrations easily and then to baggage claim to collect our luggage. After we got the bags, we had to go all the way to the American D Concourse to get boarding passes.

We passed long, long lines snaking through the terminal. Those people were not happy as they were waiting to rebook canceled flights from the Christmas storms.

Gennie was able to use the automatic Kiosk to get our boarding passes and then we stood in another line to have our bags reloaded. Because we had come from Colombia we had to show our Avianca boarding passes so we would not be charged a bag fee. The next step was to go back to the TSA drop off to recheck our bags.

We had lunch at a food court and then went to the gate area to wait for our 3:45 flight. While Gennie typed the journal, I sampled a Guatemalan Rum and talked with a veteran American flight attendant learning more inside information about the industry.

Time went quickly and soon we were boarding for our final leg of the journey. We were offered a beverage and in a little while the first class flight attendant who we had been talking to in the waiting area stopped by with two freshly baked oatmeal cranberry cookies! Yummy!

Our seat companion on this flight was Paula, a young woman from Colombia, married to a man from Denver. She was flying with her little dog Molly who had much better flight manners than many passengers we have seen!

We were only a few minutes late, but we landed in Denver, got our bags, and then hopped on to the Pikes Peak Shuttle. We were back in our car by 7:30 pm. We stopped briefly at Safeway and were home at 8:55.

All was well at home, the cats were so happy to see us, and Tim had gathered the mail and our Christmas cards. We started a load of laundry and called it a day, happy to be home once more.
