Southwest

Day 04 - Saturday, May 23, 2007 - Prescott, Arizona, Exploring Prescott and Surrounding Area

Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time so it is light very early and we actually saw the hint of the sun at 6:30. There were a few clouds, but enough blue skies to be encouraging. After we showered and had orange juice, we left for breakfast with Jim and Mary Ann and their son Jim.

Our destination was in Prescott, a local morning eatery, Waffles & More! The food was fantastic and the service was that old fashioned, “I care about you” attitude. What a pleasure!

We came back to the house to bring Jim (son) home and then the four of us traveled north of Forest Trails through the Granite Dells to Watson Lake Park. We spent time taking photos of the huge granite boulders and the clear water reflecting the unusual rock formations.

Because the sun was out today, we got some great shots with the high contrasts of the green trees, clear water, and the blue skies, making the red rocks stand out. We talked to a local fisherman who said this lake was great for catching bass and catfish.

After an hour at the lake we went back to the city center on Hwy 89 to Prescott. We found a parking place and went directly to the Court House Square and the Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale held annually on Memorial Day.

The Square was crowded with artists from the Southwest and the many people who were there to see the fine art. It would not be hard to spend both time and money here – what beautiful creative works of art. Most were paintings, bronze sculptures, and water colors to die for!

After a light lunch at Quizno’s on Whiskey Row, home to the famous Prescott Saloons of days past, we walked a few blocks to the Sharlot Hall Museum Complex. First we watched a short video of the history of the area from the Native People’s times, to the days of the Arizona Territory, through Statehood in 1912.

On the site of the Territorial Governor’s Mansion, there is now an exceptional museum, a ranch house, and a school. The Fremont House, home of John C. Fremont, the 5th Territorial Governor was also part of the museum.

We also toured the Transportation Building where we saw a restored Wells Fargo Stage Coach, a covered wagon, and buckboard, as well as old bicycles, buggies, and coaches.

At 4:00 we left the museum and walked back to the car. The sun was warm and we got a taste of the true Arizona weather. We arrived back home and changed into warm weather gear, checked our mail, and began to recap the day’s activities for the journal and going through the hundreds of photos of the day.

We spent our last evening in Prescott with Jim and May Ann watching Apple TV, a compilation of their photographs of their many trips. It is wonderful to compare travel notes and discuss our future adventures with our friends.
