Buenos Aires-Iguazu

Post Trip OAT Day 5 - Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - Iguaçu Falls - Transfer to Buenos Aires - Return Home

We packed up our bags, had one more pão de queijo, and then said goodbye to Brazil! At 8:45 we got on the bus and went a short way to the Brazilian border.

We got out of the bus and passed through the whole immigration process without a problem. At the Argentinean side Nuxa took our passports to be stamped to enter the country again.

The drive to the airport was scenic and when we arrived we checked in easily as we only had carry-on bags. There were only two gates at the airport so we enjoyed the uncrowded terminal.

Instead of leaving at 9:40, our flight was delayed for a few minutes, but almost as soon as the plane arrived from Buenos Aries, we boarded and at 10:15 we left for the capital city. The flight was not full so people moved around to get a comfortable seat.

We had a bumpy flight through a storm but arrived safely at Aeroparque at 11:40. We waited just a short time for the bus and then went straight to the hotel.

I quickly got into my big bag and retrieved the two photos I had brought from Colorado. I presented one to Duane for all of the work he did in planning this trip.

The other went to our Trip Leader, Maria Elena for putting up with us in Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. She did an excellent job and under the circumstances of a large group, she is to be commended!

Many people went out for a coffee and lunch; some had more shopping to do, but we decided just to explore the city a little more. Unfortunately there was a subway strike today and the city was packed with even more pedestrians than usual. Taxis were at a premium and the buses were crowded.

We found the famous Burger King only 6 blocks from our hotel. It is located in a former mansion and is known as one of the 10 best places to eat. It was very busy and there were few available seats. A local Porteña offered us her seat as they were ready to leave.

We walked back to the hotel by way of Florida Avenue, one of the busy pedestrian streets lined with exclusive shops. Many shoppers were carrying packages, preparing for the Christmas holidays.

At 2:15 we arrived back to the hotel and the room that had been arranged for us to store and organize our belongings. We repacked our luggage into three bags and changed into our Colorado clothes for the flight home.

It was cool in the lobby of the hotel and the Wi-Fi was fast so we relaxed and used the free internet until it was time to leave for the airport.

Maria Elena organized our transfers to the international airport outside the city for 5:30. We arrived in plenty of time to get our luggage checked in, pay the exit tax ($18 per person), and to get our boarding passes. We did find out that the flight will go to Santiago first and then directly to Los Angeles.

We settled down in the business lounge and had a chance to get a beverage and we will send off this journal before we board. The remainder of the flight to Denver will be in tomorrow’s journal.
