Best of Burgundy

DAY 1 - Monday - 9-19-05 Depart from Denver

We had a beautiful day in Colorado to walk in the crisp air and morning sun. We had time to do a few last minute chores and for Gennie to finalize her University of Phoenix online class. At 12:45 we said good bye to our cats, Buddha and Kwai, and left Capella Drive. We had a few errands to run in Denver and then had lunch Chipotle, one of our favorite Mexican upscale fast food restaurants. We guessed there would not be many opportunities to eat Mexican food in France.

We arrived at the Pikes Peak long term parking area and a shuttle bus was there to pick us up in about 5 minutes. Because of the past problems I have had with TSA on the last three flights we wanted to arrive in plenty of time to avoid any delays. We were flying Business Class so we were able to walk right up to the counter and Peter, the Lufthansa agent was able to check our luggage, confirm our assigned seats, and scan our passports right away. There were no delays, no extra questions, even though we were prepared for all eventualities. By 3 PM we were sitting at the A41-43 waiting for our 747 to arrive.

We were able to take some pictures at the terminal and while seated, we helped a woman from Lisbon, Portugal to communicate with the flight personnel. I had a chance to work on my Portuguese and we chatted about the differences between life, politics and US homes to those in Portugal. I also noticed that Lufthansa crew was quite extensive, with 16 flight attendants and 3 in the cockpit.

At 4:40 the first call was made to board the aircraft. As we were in seats 1A and C we entered the aircraft and were shown to our seats. At 5:27 we pulled away from the gate with our section completely full. I would think economy was likewise. In a plane that can seat over 500 people, it is a logistical challenge. We were told by the flight crew that the duration of the trip would be 9 hours and we would arrive in Frankfurt around 10:25 AM (2:25 Colorado time) - a trip of 5039 miles as we cruised at 39,000 feet.

Our seats have a leg and foot rest and we can recline without bothering the people directly behind us. We also have a great deal of room for our feet and possessions between our seats and the bulkhead. What is interesting in a 747 is that those of us in this section are farther forward than the pilots.

Once we arrived at our cruising altitude we were offered refreshments, Gennie and I both took a glass of red wine, mine a Medoc from France and she a Pinotage from South Africa. At 7 PM dinner started with many choices. We chose a Thai Style Chicken Salad as our hors d'oeuvre, then a Mesclun Mix Salad with bread, rolls and butter. The entrees we chose were the Scallops and Shrimp Cioppino for Gennie and the Tenderloin of Beef for me. We shared so it was very good. For dessert we had fruit salad, Apple Cinnamon Cake, and an assorted cheese plate. Through all of these courses, beverages were offered but Gennie and I felt it would be best if we drank the water and not much more alcohol.

After dinner the flight attendants came around with the duty free list and asked us to close the window shades. By 9 PM the overhead lights were dimmed and most people had turned off their reading lights.

As we fly toward Greenland and the great northern circle toward southern Germany, it is time for me to save this journal and turn off the computer.
