Day 1 - October 1, 2006 - Depart from Monument, Denver, Atlanta, U.S.
With an early departure from Denver, we were up and out of the house by 8:30 AM. Bob and Susan, my cousins, were also flying home to Seattle from their wonderful visit with us over the last four days.
Sunday mornings are easy drives to Denver and Denver International Airport. The view of Pikes Peak was impressive and our own Elephant Rock stood out against the deep blue Colorado sky. Making good time to Denver, we arrived at DIA, I dropped everyone off at Alaska Airlines and Delta and then went to park the car at the Pikes Peak lot.
In a quick turnaround, I was back at the terminal and joined Gennie, Susan and Bob. They had already checked in and waited for Gennie and I to go through our procedure. Once we got to the desk, I was again asked several questions and my passport had to be run through the special TSA approval. The gate agent for Delta, Glenn, was very nice and understanding and processed us through. He also mentioned that we could use the Crown Room to relax and wait for our flight.
The four of us walked to the security area and had about a 30 minute walk-through before we went into the screening area. There were no problems so we walked to the trains and proceeded to Terminal C. We grabbed a quick bite to eat and bid Bob and Susan goodbye. We then walked over to Crown Room, found some comfortable chairs and I began to work on the journal.
We boarded the aircraft at 12:25 and by 12:50 the doors were closed and we had a full plane - every seat, in First Class and Coach. Our flight was uneventful and we arrived at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport at 5:35 EDT. It was warm (82 degrees) and humid. We chose to walk to Terminal T and the Crown Room where we were graciously treated.
At 7:15 we left the cool confines of the lounge and walked to gate T-2 for our overnight flight to Manchester, England. We were very surprised when we saw that our flight had been delayed to 8:30 due to aircraft change. We finally boarded at 8:45 but it was the slowest boarding of any flight we have been on since we started flying. They finally closed the door at 9:53 and we took off at 10:10. We got a lot of apologies from terminal agents, flight attendants and the pilot. But at least we were on our way to Manchester.
